Here's what I think anyway... Before our very eyes, we are watching a rat race among the top Democrat presidential candidates to see who can make defeat in Iraq sound best.
Hilary got herself into a bit of trouble when Under-Secretary of Defense Eric Edelman sent her a letter this week saying that her call to "prepare plans for a phased redeployement" only serves to reinforce "enemy propaganda that the United States will abandon its allies in Iraq, much as we are perceived to have done in Vietnam, Lebanon, and Somalia." The letter concludes that her position, "understandably unnerves the very same Iraqi allies we are asking to assume enormous personal risks." Well said.
Hilary tattled to his boss, Defense Secretary Robert Gates, but didn't have much to say in the way of refuting Edelman's claims.
Yet despite Hillary's valiant effort, the Ridiculocity of the Day still goes to Barack Obama, who said that the risk of genocide was not a good enough reason to keep American soldiers in Iraq. Wow... Talk about "unnerving" our allies!
